I think that in some ways git might end up having more features than BK. I
certainly hope so, as it is always nice when a project becomes more than
just a reimplementation of existing software. I hate it when RMS uses the
term "Free replacement", when I think that open/Free model should help
software be innovative. It also seems that some of the other open/free
SCMs are scrambling to interoperate with git or implement some git-like
features.
In all I think this BK incident was a good thing. BK helped increase the productivity of the Linux developers for a few years. Now that the "debacle" has happened, those developers (especially Linus) understand what it is they want from an SCM, and even more importantly, understand that they even want an SCM at all, something that was in doubt prior to BK. Finally, it allowed RMS to chime in with an example of the evils of non-Free software, which I am sure he appreciated. The funny thing is that RMS seems to be wrong in that everyone is better off now for having used this evil software for a time.
