Yes, I'm a ricer, I run gentoo and drive a civic. I'm going to explain how to take apart your door and replace your speaker with something that booms.... Acutally, this is a public service blog entry. I'm going to talk about removing the door trim, but not to change the speakers, but to replace the window regulator. I've now had to replace 2 regulators in our old 94 camry and a few weeks back the window regulator on our minivan went out. (Which always seems to happen at the most inopportune time. On the camry, we were out climbing and stopped in Santa Cruz to end the day relaxing on the beach and the window wouldn't close with all our stuff in the car. The Odyssey window started going out during the biggest snow storm of the year....). The window regulator part (for both camry's and odysseys) was around $90. These things are made of plastic, so I'm not surprised they go out. The Odyssey regulator was in 2 when we pulled it out!
If you pay a dealer to install these, it's going to run another $190 or so in labor. This might be worth it if your busy. My biggest problem is the actual getting the trim off without ruining too many of the plastic parts. Well, on the Odyssey I only broke the mirror cover (I think I can fix it, but sadly I don't think I needed to remove it, though some of the literature suggested I do so). The other problem is that the Web is actually horrible in providing directions to doing so. I actually went to a dead tree library to check out Mitchell Repair, Electric Service and Repair 2001 Imported vehicles. The book had 2 paragraphs in removing the door trim. I'm not going to repeat what's in there. Removing the trim is actually pretty straight forward. The biggest issue was the plastic around the interior knob. To remove it you need to slide it forward. (If you have the bottom of the trim unscrewed you should be able to look up and see that there is plastic preventing it from moving in one direction, if you slide it in the other it will come off. If you force it or try to pry it off it will probably break, which is a problem because it is actually attached to the handle!)
Anyway, I hope google picks this up and it is useful to anyone replacing their regulator. Good luck!
You could submit it to instructables, it's a nice place where to find
similar explanations.
Diego- Perhaps if I wanted to put an LED or Laser in the trim instructables
would have been a good place for a writeup. (The non-sarcastic reading of
that sentence was "I've never seen such instructables on instructables....)
The other problem is that I didn't take any pictures and don't want to
dismantle my door to take them now.... ;)
"To remove it you need to slide it forward." Please know that the
preceding sentence in your blog saved me a whole lot of trouble. What a
simple thing to do but not easy to see that it needs to be done when
removing the handle assembly. Thank you...thank you!
