Utah (Salt Lake area) DSL or Cable suggestions....

posted 2006.08.11 Fri
Dear (Utah) Lazyweb- We are moving into a house in Bountiful, Utah soon. Anyone in the area know if I have any options other than Qwest (DSL) or Comcast (cable) for a high speed connection? Any reccomendations? Are people satisfied with the service they get? If so, who are you using?

Quest appears to have a fast (5Mbps) service using MSN as the ISP. Though the are a host of other ISPs. Is MSN going to require using Windows? (Cause I'm running Linux)

thanks much for any advice or experiences...

I'd suggest looking into Xmission. They're a great local ISP and even provide fiberoptic in many areas.

I was hoping to suggest Utopia, but it looks like Bountiful isn't in their service area. That being the case, I'll agree with the previous posters: XMission DSL is probably your best option.

Qwest doesn't require that you use MSN. In fact, when I told them I didn't need an MSN email address they agreed to make Qwest my ISP. I get 7MBPS down and 1MBPS up, though this varies by location. Speed wise and cost wise it is much cheaper than cable. I've installed the DSL modem for others and have never needed to use any of the MSN stuff. I just go straight to the modem and set it up.

You might check out speakeasy DSL. They are the best DSL provider that I've ever used.

Yes, I am looking for a good connection in Bountiful also. We had Qwest DSL but it went down everytime there was a rain or snow storm. Also, the DLS service is the slower speed and the Qwest cannot tell you went or if the faster speeds will be availabel. Once when the DSL went down we told them NOT to send a service person, they did anyway and want to charge us $85 he was there less then 5 minutes, said it was our problem not qwest's, that is when we dropped them and started looking for someone else.
